Il y a si peu de vrais évènements dans une vie. Il y a si peu de réel dans la vie. Le monde est trop étroit pour son ambition et Dieu n'existe pas : alors que faire du temps qui reste, de tout le temps ? Aujourd'hui il y a cette usine, demain autre chose. Il offre à qui sait voir une vision irremplaçable du monde des affaires : un canton, une terre basse, une terre sans ciel, sans espérance. On fabrique du plastique, de l'acier, du carton. On invente des déchets. C'est ça, l'industrie régnante, la grande aventure de l'industrie : c'est ne plus savoir ce qu'on fait et que cela ne mérite pas le temps de le faire, et c'est persuader les autres qu'il faut le faire encore plus, huit heures par jour, huit siècles par heure. Le monde industriel c'est le monde tout entier, une fable noire pour enfants, une mauvaise insomnie dans le jour. La présence de l'argent y est considérable, autant que celle de Dieu dans les sociétés primitives. Elle irradie de la même façon. Elle gouverne le mouvement des pensées comme celui des visages. Ceux qui commandent la servent.
